A War of Hide and Seek (かくれんぼせんそう Kakurenbo Sensō?) is the eighth episode of The Elusive Samurai anime series.

Yorishige tells Tokiyuki there are times when he cannot see the future. As some people have come to rely on Yorishige’s reputation and power as a god, he cannot reveal this shortcoming to anyone.[1]

Synopsis[]

The Elusive Warriors head for Nakayama-sho, at the northern end of the Suwa domain.

There, Tokiyuki and his friends meet a boy named Fubuki. After the adults were killed by the Ogasawara forces, Fubuki and the other children continue to protect their village, which continues to be attacked

Working with Fubuki, who is also well versed in military tactics, the TElusive Warriors come up with a plan to fight back against the enemy.

Tokiyuki learns from Fubuki certain sword techniques, but the people targeting the village are bloodthirsty demons led by Shokan, a man feared as a "villain."

With this new, young brain on his side, will Tokiyuki be able to get out of this predicament?![2]

Anime and Manga Differences[]

  • The episode begins with an aerial view of Nakayama village, which is not included in the manga.
  • In the anime, the Elusive Warriors along with Fubuki finish a strategy meeting to defend the village so Shizuku begins to delegate roles to the Elusive Warriors. However in the manga this happens after Tokiyuki tells Shizuku that he wants to help defend the village before Tokiyuki asks Fubuki to let him help defend the village.
  • In the anime, when Tokiyuki tries to attack Fubuki during their practice session, Tokiyuki has several flashbacks of their previous battles before landing the blow, in the manga this does not happen.
  • When Fubuki shakes Tokiyuki's hand and with it the food that Fubuki was eating, in the anime their positions are reversed compared to the manga.
  • The anime adds a scene of the village children evacuating.
  • In the anime when Shokan mentions that three groups have not returned from the village, we see a transition of the traps made by the village children while in the manga we see several people falling into them.
  • In the anime when the narrator tells about the rogues you see several scenes of ants in the background, in the manga you see scenes of the rogues looting villages and kidnapping women and children.
  • In the manga when the Shokan party is ambushed going down the hill Shokan is surprised by the ambush, however in the anime he is relaxed and orders his subordinates to continue down the hill.
  • Asada's appearance in the anime is after Fubuki reveals the plan to freeze the rivers, while in the manga it is before that revelation.
  • In the manga, Shiro can be seen yelling at the warriors for not being able to cross the frozen river, however in the anime Shiro is shown later when they arrive at the village.
  • In the anime, Furan, Shiro and Byakkotsu's names are revealed at the same time however in the manga they are introduced one by one.
  • In the manga, you can see the cut that Kojiro and Shizuku give Byakkotsu while in the anime, you only can see Byakkotsu falling from the cut.
  • In the anime when Kojiro and Ayako reach the dead end, Kojiro shoots an arrow to make Shokan approach them and get him into the trap, while in the manga, Shokan just chases them and falls into the trap.
  • In the manga, after Shokan is locked up with Tokiyuki, Fubuki prepares to face Furan and Shiro while in the anime, this happens after Kojiro talks about Fubuki and how trustworthy he is.
  • The anime skips the flashback of Fubuki, Tokiyuki, and Kojiro being at the house to explain the plan to them.
  • In the manga, when Shokan talks to Tokiyuki and tells him his value in kanmon, the conversion into yen is shown in parentheses while in the anime this conversion is narrated over Shokan's voice.
  • In the anime when Shokan talks about why he kills the children's parents, there are several scenes of children and mothers crying with blood, while in the manga there are scenes of children being enslaved.
  • In the manga, Shokan stabs his sword into a wall before getting into a serious fight with Tokiyuki while in the anime he throws his sword away.
  • The anime omits the scene of Tokiyuki dodging Shokan's attack.
