The Gentle Uncle (やさしいおじさん, Yasashī Ojisan^?) is the second episode of The Elusive Samurai anime series.

Takauji Ashikaga, once considered the guardian of the Kamakura shogunate, stages a rebellion that led to its quick destruction. Tokiyuki’s older brother, Kunitoki, successfully evades the eyes of the warriors loyal to Takauji, and he is placed under the care of their uncle, Muneshige Godaiin.

Synopsis

Ashikaga Takauji was known as the guardian deity of the Kamakura Shogunate. Due to Takauji's rebellion, the Kamakura Shogunate was driven to ruin with astonishing speed. Tokiyuki's older brother Kunitoki was protected by his uncle Godaiin Muneshige and managed to escape the eyes of the samurai allied with Takauji. Meanwhile, Tokiyuki was hiding in an abandoned house on the outskirts of Kamakura in order to head to Yorishige's territory, Shinano, Suwa. However, he was under watchful eye even there. Only the flags that his brother knew were flying. Who was the enemy and who was the ally? Tokiyuki and his friends, who were devastated by the chain of kyogiri, were faced with further hardships.

Anime and Manga Differences

• The anime opens with Kunitoki and Godaiin hiding from Nitta's warriors in a cave, however in the manga, it is only shown when Godaiin sold Kunitoki in said cave.
• A scene is added of Tokiyuki having a nightmare after his village and family members were massacred.
• Due to the absence of Kojiro and Ayako as reinforcements during the rescue of Tokiyuki in the previous episode, they do not appear at the house before Tokiyuki escapes. In the manga, since they were in Kamakura before, they met Yorishige at the time when he tried to kiss Tokiyuki.
• The anime adds the scene in which Tokiyuki escapes from the abandoned house and goes to see the place where he hears two people talking about the death of his brother, in the manga this scene takes place outside the abandoned house.
• After Tokiyuki, Yorishige and Shizuku were watching Godaiin from the bushes, a scene occurs of the three of them talking about how Tokiyuki can become a hero, this scene does not exist in the manga.
• The entire scene of Kojiro and Ayako introducing themselves to Tokiyuki is original to the anime.
• The scene in which Shizuku, Ayako and Kojiro are seen talking about Tokiyuki is original to the anime.
• The scene where Yorishige gives Tokiyuki a sword is expanded in the anime.
• The final scene where Tokiyuki remembers his conversation with Kunitoki is an expansion of said conversation from the previous episode in addition to being an original scene from the anime since in the manga Tokiyuki only remembers when Kunitoki told him that he could be a hero.

Trivia

• During their introductions, Kojiro and Ayako reveal their connection with the Nezu and Mochizuki clans, respectively. In the manga, this is only revealed some time later.
