Chapter 186 is titled "Ogasawara Sadamune 1340".
Synopsis[]
Sadamune warns Toki of Tokiyuki's ambush causing him to turn, which Tokiyuki uses to his advantage to shoot an arrow through Toki's shoulder in the same spot Akiie did, which incapacitates Toki. As Tokiyuki descends, Sadamune gives his approval to Tokiyuki's archery as Tokiyuki avoids incoming attacks and regroups with his allies as they depart. Muneyoshi writes a poem for Tokiyuki and departs to return to Shinano.
Toki curses Tokiyuki for injuring him and Sadamune tells him to change his ways as his old injuries and pride are dulling his skills, remembering Shokan and the Kokushi who both died recklessly.
A subordinate passes a report to Sadamune for review, which he rips apart as it chronicles nothing but a prolonged back and forth which ended with his enemies escaping and is therefore not worth reporting to his superiors. Sadamune bows to arrow down Tokiyuki the next time they see each other.
The narration elaborates that Sadamune would not get to see major combat again, instead taking a backseat as an influential Shugo of the Ashikaga and pass away from illness at the age of 56 in the year 1347. Elaborating how he started from scratch and established a successful clan that would survive into the Sengoku period, while leaving behind many cultural legacies.
Having lost only to Akiie and Tokiyuki, Sadamune is regarded as a great general whose accomplishments were largely unknown, although he himself cared little for glory and just wanted to fulfill his duties. Sadamune is thus celebrated as an obscure figure that helped shape Japanese history.
